Taxpayers down under are footing the bill for the TV diva to send her audience to the country.
Oprah Winfrey delighted fans in her audience on Monday when she announced that she'll be taking all 300 of them with her on an 8-night stay in Australia. She made the announcement on the first day of her 25th and final season as host of the wildly popular daytime talk show. Australians themselves were not so thrilled however to learn that they, and not the wealthy talk show host, will be paying for the trip. As part of "Project O," Australian tourism officials are putting up $3 million of taxpayer money for Oprah's junket, which they say will eventually bring in much more than that because of the positive publicity it will generate for the country. The tourism industry in Australia has stalled in recent years.
