An unnamed pregnant woman is the first of the Sun Sea Tamil migrants to be granted release from detention.

Two pregnant women were among the 492 people who arrived in Canada onboard the MV Sun Sea in August, and yesterday one of the expecting mothers was ordered released from detention while her refugee claim is processed. On Monday her lawyers successfully argued that she should be released in order to care for her three young children, who were also onboard the ship. Her husband remains in custody in a B.C. jail along with the rest of the migrants. One of her children has a severe head injury, and the woman herself has a serious arm injury which she says was sustained in a bomb blast in Sri Lanka.
