Three separate rescue efforts are underway to reach the 33 men who have been trapped underground since August 5.
If they were ever going to quit, now would be the time. But apparently the miners trapped underground in northern Chile aren't interested in kicking their smoking habit just yet. The group had been asking for cigarettes since they first made contact with rescue workers in mid-August, but there were fears it would be unsafe to smoke in their underground shelter. They are now receiving two packs a day to split between them, and workers also lowered an electric cable into the shelter to provide electric light, which should help regulate their sleeping patterns. Meanwhile, three different plans to dig the miners out are being pursued. It could take until November to free them.
