Tamil Congress fears espionage in computer theft

Toronto police are investigating a weekend break in at the headquarters of the Canadian Tamil Congress.

Canadian Tamil Congress spokesman David Poopalapallai says that the theft of one of the organization’s computers over the weekend was either a hate crime or an act of espionage. The congress gained notoriety this summer because it’s working to secure refugee status for the 492 Tamil migrants who arrived in B.C. aboard the MV Sun Sea, and it was originally feared the stolen computer contained sensitive information relating to the case. It appears now that little information was lost. The congress is collecting information about alleged war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan government, prompting fears that a Sri Lankan intelligence agency was behind the break in. The group has also received hate mail from Canadians over its involvement with the MV Sun Sea passengers.
