Fuel tanker runs aground in Northwest Passage

The grounding is the third such incident in Arctic waters in less than a month.

A ship carrying nine million litres of diesel fuel has run aground near Nunavut but is not leaking any oil, according to coast guard officials. The Nanny, a 6,500 tonne ship owned by Coastal Shipping Limited, became stuck early Wednesday. Transport Canada is working on a plan to refloat the ship, which would likely entail shifting or unloading cargo. The accident probably occurred due to the failure of the ship’s steering or navigation equipment. Another tanker ran aground near the same spot in early August, and on August 27 a cruise ship named the Clipper Adventure became stuck when it hit an uncharted rock.
