Plans for the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque” aren't sitting well with New Yorkers.
A poll conducted by the New York Times says that two thirds of New York residents want a planned Islamic community centre to be moved further away from the site of the 9/11 attacks. The proposed 13-storey building would include a mosque, and sits two blocks north of where Muslim terrorists destroyed the World Trade Centre. Plans for the building have sparked national debate, with detractors saying they are insensitive to victims of 9/11. The poll also found that one fifth of residents say they have negative feelings towards Muslims, and half oppose the building of the Islamic centre. A majority of respondents acknowledged developers have the right to carry out their plans.
