B.C. salmon run is now biggest in nearly a century, officials say

The sockeye salmon fishery was once thought to be all but dead, but this year the fish are back in record numbers

The Fraser River salmon run is so large this year that fishermen are running out of places to store the fish they’ve caught. For the first time in years, native fishermen are selling whole fish at roadside stalls in large numbers, and the high catch volumes have made warehouse space and ice for fishing boats scarce commodities. Last week the Pacific Salmon Commission raised its estimate of this year’s Fraser River sockeye salmon run to 30 million, making it the largest run since 1913. Recently, fisheries in the region were closed for several years in a row because runs were so small.
