RCMP report says long-gun registry efficient

Report has been in government hands since February, but has yet to be released

In the latest show of police support for the long-gun registry, an RCMP report has found that the controversial program is efficient and effective in reducing gun-related crime. The program, which compels owners of long-barreled guns to register their firearms, is a divisive political issue. The Conservative government has committed to eliminating it because they believe it’s not cost-effective and many gun owners feel it’s invasive. But police across the country have endorsed the registry, and earlier this week the president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police Bill Blair said the report must be made public before parliament votes on whether to scrap the registry this September.
