Canadians need to know more about health spending, says auditor general

“We don’t know if we’re getting good value for money,” according to Sheila Fraser

Canada’s auditor general says that Canadians aren’t being given a comprehensive picture of how our tax dollars are being spent on health care, and it’s hindering our ability to engage in meaningful debate on improving the health system. Sheila Fraser made the comments at a Canadian Medical Association conference yesterday, noting that each province reports health spending based on different indicators. She recommends that provinces get together and agree on a standard reporting procedure, especially as health costs are expected to balloon as Canada’s population gets older.
