Waters continue to rise and millions are hungry, says UN

UN officials are warning that unless the millions of people affected by flooding in Pakistan receive more aid, they could be facing starvation. Catastrophic floods have devastated the country’s agriculture and displaced people are now living in crowded camps or makeshift shelters. Aid groups fear the unhygienic conditions and low food levels are leaving flood victims vulnerable to outbreaks of deadly diseases such as cholera, while officials warned this weekend that the Indus River is still rising near the southern city of Hyderabad and more flooding might occur. Yesterday the Canadian government announced it would match all private donations to relief efforts made by Canadians between August 2 and September 12.
